CANISTEO/GREENWOOD: Charles O. “Charlie” Marlatt, 92, of formerly of Third St. in Canisteo, passed away peacefully Thursday morning April 25, 2024 at the home of his daughter Cathy Alger, Main St. Greenwood surrounded by his family. Charlie was born July 15, 1931, in Hornell, to the late Elwin A. and Rachel M. (Birchard) Marlatt. On December 24, 1973 in the Adrian Baptist Church, he married the former Shirley Houghtaling who predeceased him June 9, 2019. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army serving our country from 1953-73, honorably discharged and was a recipient of the bronze star. Charlie lived the better part of his life in the Canisteo Valley where he drove delivery truck for several years for the former W.W. Geise, Co. in Hornell. He was a 50 plus year member of the Canisteo American Legion and a member of the Hornell VFW. He was an avid western movie enthusiast who was a big John Wayne fan. He enjoyed jig saw puzzles, lotto ticket rub-offs, cared very much for animals and always had a dog at his side with Rascal being his latest companion. Charlie is survived by sons Elwin Marlatt (Denise Curry) of Canisteo, Michael Fox of Arizona and Willard (Jody) Cole of Canisteo, daughters Patricia (David) Owens of Woodhull, Sherry Osmin (Calvin Willis) of Canisteo, Cathy Alger (Jeff Witt) of Greenwood, several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by two brothers Clayton and Donald Marlatt. A special recognition would like to go out to the staff of both the Home and Health Services of Hornell and Care First of Painted Post for the wonderful care and assistance provided for our father and grandfather leading up to his last days. From our family to you, thank you. The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 30th from 4-6 pm at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo, where funeral and committal services with military honors will take place immediately following calling hours at 6:00 pm. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Canisteo.
